Jane Austen left this world with having written only 6 full works, but the world, two hundred years on, loved every word she wrote. We still love her manners and her wit. We love her romance and the way she showed her class for what they were - a bit snobbish. So what to do when you've read all of Jane's work over and over, and wish she'd written more. Read Carolyn Miller. The Elusive Miss Ellison was a trip back to Jane's Regency world. The language-perhaps not quite as intricate and intense as Jane's- brings the reader back into the parlours and drawing rooms of English houses. Lavinia Ellison is feisty and good, just as a Regency heroine should be. Lord Hawkesbury is handsome and rich, and just a little bit out of touch with those beneath him. In a way, the story is predictable, but to be perfectly honest, when I read a romance from this era, predictable is exactly what I want. I loved it, you'll love it too.Tags : The Elusive Miss Ellison (Regency Brides: A Legacy of Grace) [Carolyn Miller] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Handsome appearance counts for naught unless matched by good character and actions. That's the firm opinion of not-so-meek minister's daughter Lavinia Ellison. Ms. Miller is one of my new “want to read and look forward to new books” authors.
If you like the writings of Jane Austin, you will love this book! It is 1843, the Victorian Era but the setting is in small village in England instead of a big city.
Lavinia Ellsion is the minister’s daughter. She lives with her father and her Aunt Patience who came to live with them after her mother’s tragic death. She steps to the beat of a different drummer than her friends. She casts aside the fluff of dress and stuffy conduct that her peers dote on. She thinks nothing of working in the garden without a hat or taking walks alone in the country. Both are big social faux pas for a young woman of that era. Her concerns are more with helping the needy and the poor.
The village is all a twitter with the coming of the new Earl of Hawkesbury, Nicholas. All the mothers are preening their daughters in hopes of making him their new son-in-law. Lavinia has no interest in finding a husband. Her concerns are more that the new earl does more to care for the poor and alleviate their suffering, one of his duties that came with the position. Nicholas is prideful, arrogant and selfish. He loathes the new job forced upon him by his social position.
No two people could be more opposites!
Lavinia is disgusted by his smugness and haughtiness. I found it amusing that she had the same attitude but hers came from her religious and strong sense of duty to the destitute, whereas his came from his sense of entitlement and no sense of duty to the people.
You can imagine the strong personality clashes as they are thrown together in many situations. We never know what circumstances life might throw our way or who will enter in that will challenge and change us. Such was the case with Lavinia and Nicholas. Tragedy opens the doors to their hearts and minds that would have otherwise stayed closed. Even as love blossoms, their Lavinia’s strong personality and stubbornness consistently sprouts misunderstandings and hurt.
A beautiful love story filled with surprises. I had no idea that earls had any more to do than have their titles and be rich. It was fascinating to learn about the operations and expectations in a small village during that era. I so enjoyed the book and look forward to the next one.
I was provided a review copy of this book set by Kregel Publications, with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
I'll be honest when I started reading The Elusive Miss Ellison, I wasn't sure what I'd gotten myself into. I had a hard time getting into the rhythm of the writing—I felt like I was reading something from Jane Austen's time, rather than something written now, and I encountered several words I was unfamiliar with. I also didn't have much love for either Lavinia—who was quick to judge, unforgiving, and prideful—or Nicholas—who was haughty and rather mean.
If I hadn't agreed to review this book, I might have given up about four chapters into it. And if I'd done that, I would have missed out on a really great story!
With shades of Pride & Prejudice and Beauty and the Beast, The Elusive Miss Ellison really picked up (at least for me) about a third of the way into the novel. At that point, events caused Lavinia and Nicholas to spend more time together and really get to know each other—to see past their preconceived notions. Also, both had a spiritual awakening of sorts—I was pleasantly surprised by the faith thread in this book, which felt realistic and showed the importance of not just having faith in Christ, but in allowing Him to continually refine you.
There's also a twist in the novel that I didn't anticipate and greatly enjoyed, and I loved the interactions between Lavinia and Nicholas, as well as with their friends and family.
The Elusive Miss Ellison is, overall, a very enjoyable novel, and I'm glad I kept going past the first few chapters! I highly recommend it to regency romance fans.
Disclosure of material connection I received a copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review, and the opinions expressed are my own.
