Rendering the deepest of heartstrings, Echoes of Family grabbed me from the very first page and kept me yearning for the next, engrossed in the richness of this story and stayed with me long after I reluctantly finished reading the last page. I loved this book!! It takes a very gifted writer to be able to portray the humorous side of quirky characters while still seriously conveying the devastation of mental illness and the behaviors of those afflicted or affected by the episodes of madness. Yet Barbara Claypole White does this magnificently, making you smile, laugh out loud, cry and sing along with these folks she so richly writes about. Marianne is manic-depressive and having fled England years ago with her secrets, tries to forget her tragedy, and she finds happiness in North Carolina with her husband Darius. Suddenly the haunting of her thoughts and another tragic event forces her to flee back to England to confront the secrets of her past. I loved the unforgettable Jade, and also Gabriel, a boy from Marianne's childhood, now a priest. I was so happy to be gifted with copy of this beautiful book, and I highly recommend it - and would give it way more than 5 stars if it were allowed!! I have loved all of Barbara's books and this one is truly another one of the best. I received an ARC of this book. I devour all of Barbara's books; this was no exception. She does an excellent job of bringing awareness to mental illnesses through her characters. This particular book deals with bioplar; how difficult it is for the main character and also for those who love and care for her. I loved the characters; especially Gabrielle and Jade. The majority of the book is set in an English village; lovely talk of tea and scones and chocolate biscuits! Secrets of the past come into play with a surprise towards the end. A must read; especially if you love someone with a mental illness.
ECHOES OF FAMILY is a beautifully written, complex and deeply human story that centers on one woman’s courageous journey to confront her troubled past and to once and for all unlock the dark secrets she left there. It’s risky, given her mental and emotional fragility. She’s damaged people, those closest to her. There have been fatalities, two, in fact. The mental health profession has labeled her manic-depressive among other things. Is she that, or is she something more than what the label suggests? Can she survive the truth once she finds it? Barbara Claypole White’s ECHOES OF FAMILY is an emotional and poignant tale that is as witty as it is wise, with an engaging cast of characters and a family you will love and not soon forget.
I received an e-copy of the book from NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing. Thank you so very much.
This book was about Marianne who has bipolar. When she was 17, an horrible tragedy happened and she has been in and out of institutions trying to get her meds correct and attempted suicide more than once. She grew up in a small England town and her very best friend was Gabriel. She is now living in North Carolina and owns/runs a record producing company. She is a Mom to Jade who came to live with her as a teenager. Marianne started a group Girls in Motion for teenage girls in trouble that they would have a place to stay and someone who cares about them. Marianne is married to Darius who loves her to the moon and back. Marianne suffers another tragedy and goes to England back to her home town where she reconnects with Gabriel. By reconnecting with the past she finally hopes to get the answers to the past she has been looking for. This book was such a heartbreaking story. So much pain but yet so much love. Marianne will always be with me now. I will always wonder how she is doing. How is Darius? How is Jade? How many more girls has Marianne saved with Girls in Motion? My favorite quote from the book is "Time doesn't erase the missing but our scars become the map to our future." Some stories stay with you forever and this is definitely one of them. I loved it from beginning to end.
Echoes of Family is a gritty, compelling, honest, and sympathetic look into the minds of characters who are broken in so many ways. Barbara Claypole White takes us on a roller coaster of a journey, as we follow along with Marianne, Darius, Jade, and Gabriel. Each of the characters is damaged in some way, and unable to escape the tragedies, mistakes and regrets in their pasts. The story is at times filled with frenetic energy, and at other times the story is very quiet, the same way Marianne's bipolar mind must feel. The author's unique perspective, wit, humor, heart and deep understanding and compassion are evident in every page of this book, and she is a master when it comes to sharp, real dialogue between her characters. Throughout the book I felt like a passenger on a whirlwind of a ride; my soul plummeting and then soaring; my heart racing, aching, and hopeful. This is a story about the scars we leave on each other, and about a woman trying to find a family out of nothing more than echoes. This is a story, and these are characters, that will live in my heart forever. I received a free review copy in exchange for an honest review.
