I'm a huge fan of james Hadley Chase; I've been reading his novels since I was about fifteen. "The Dead Stay Dumb" is classic Chase. The plot was somewhat predictable but the beauty of Chase' s work here, and as always, is in his delivery. He has a tendency of pulling you in and making you part of the story, with the responsibility of observing, sympathizing, and sometimes empathizing. The Dead Stay Dumb, is getting three stars from me because it lacks the twists and turns that I am accustomed to in Chase' s work; but nonetheless, a very rivetting and suspenseful read.
